Moments of Despair

We had begun our second winter of living in the car. It was freezing outside and there was a lot of snow. Every night we struggled to find a way not to freeze to death. Because of our breath, the entire inside of the car was covered with a thick layer of ice. The windows no longer opened and we had to save gas, so most of the time we couldn’t have the heater on. We had great difficulty falling asleep. For hours, we stared at nothing.

I saw Robbie fall asleep, and I thought to myself what a bizarre situation I got into. But there was no other way at the moment. I thought about all kinds of things: my childhood, and the situation with my parents, but I had to move on. I looked around the car and it was like sleeping in a freezer. Through the thick layer of snow and ice on the windows, I could see the sun rising. A new day had begun. I hadn’t slept a wink all night. I had to go to the toilet, like every morning, and I had to wake up Robbie so he could start the car. “Robbie, wake up,” I nudged him. “Would you please start the car to defrost the windows, I have to go out.”

“Sure, and good morning to you too,” he added as he started the car. It was always exciting and nerve-wracking to see if the car would start and if we still had enough gas. It worked this time. It took a while for the engine to warm up. I saw -23 degrees (Celsius) on the thermometer. Everything was frozen, inside and out. Even the doors were frozen shut!

“Robbie can you hurry, I need to go!” I said.

“What can I do about it?” Robbie said. “You didn’t want to piss last night in that snowstorm.”

“Just shut up and do something to help me get out, instead of making useless comments.”

Robbie became irritated, “I have a solution for you, go back to the gym, it’s nice and warm there.”

I wisely kept my mouth shut, because I could think of ten different things to say in reply, but I would probably also hear twenty more in return. I tried again to see if my door would open, but still no. Robbie tried his side and pushed it with his shoulder and his entire body, and the door opened! He got out and said, annoyed, “Let’s go, princess, run and pee.”

“I have to put my shoes on first!” I answered.

“Hurry up,” Robbie said. “I’m up to my knees in the snow.”

Quickly, I put my blanket aside and climbed over the middle. On my knees on the driver seat, I could feel the cold wind blowing. There was indeed a lot of snow! Half a meter high! I stumbled to my place outside, behind the bushes, but I saw that it was snowed under. The wind had built a wall of snow. In a hurry, I searched for another place.
